Producer Spotlight: DJ Muggs

DJ Muggs

So unless you are a new born baby, you are familiar with the online sensation that is Facebook. About two years ago, I had to give in because a girl I was dating at the time had lured me in. It might’ve been the second or third week I joined, but I found this hip hop forum. Man was it dope. So great discussions, some great people, and hey, a few months later, I was made administrator of a group compiled of almost 10,000 people. It was pretty dope. There is actually an entire crew from Toronto, including myself, and we always kick it whenever a hip hop concert comes around the way. With that said, 3 heads on that message board: A Hip Hop Lover’s Delight 4 Life (http://yorku.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2202074628), don’t let the name fool you, we aren’t that cheesy, compiled a beautiful mix for the best of possibly one of the most underrated producers in hip hop: DJ Muggs. A founding member of Cypress Hill, and arguably the sugar and cream to the coffee of Dr. Dre, Muggs should be mentioned (but generally isn’t) amongst some of hip hop’s legendary producers. Check the mix courtesy of “The Three Amigos.”

  1. “We had to Tear This Mothafucka Up” by Ice Cube (The Predator)
  2. “Insane In the Brain” by Cypress Hill (Black Sunday)
    • What a track, a classic to say the least.
  3. “Puppet Masters” by Dr. Dre and B-Real (Soul Assassins Volume 1)
    • I believe this track was co-produced by Dre, but you can certainly see the similarities in sound between the 2 producers.
  4. “Stoned Raiders” by Cypress Hill (Temples of Boom)
  5. “Jump Around” by House of Pain (House of Pain)
    • Possibly one of the greatest pump up tracks of all time, I fail to see how this can’t get a crowd buckwild. Moreover, check out the Pete Rock Remix of this.
  6. “Throw Ya Set In The Air” by Cypress Hill (Temples of Boom)
  7. “Lost in Thought” by Funkdoobiest (Brothas Doobie)
    • Muggs hooked this group up heavily on their first 2 lp’s. Nice track right here.
  8. “Smothered Mate” by Gza (Grandmasters)
    • One of the best albums of that year has Gza being Gza and Muggs turning out this banger. The entire album has this haunting feeling. It’s like a West Coast 36 chambers.
  9. “Illusions” by Cypress Hill (Temples of Boom)
    • Q-Tip made a pretty dope remix for this joint. This is a really dope beat though.
  10. “Superhoes” by Funkdoobiest (Brothas Doobie)
    • Also on the “Friday” soundtrack, this track is pretty funny, but the slamming drums take the cake.
  11. “General Principles” by Gza (Grandmasters)
    • Ohhhh weee. The best track off that album, here it is.
  12. “How I Could Just Kill a Man” by Cypress Hill (Cypress Hill)
    • The beat switch up is wicked when it does. The electric guitar on the chorus is another rare touch that Muggs messes with more than often.
  13. “Soul Assassination” by Afu Ra (Body of the Life Force)
    • Don’t sleep on Afu, and don’t sleep on this ridiculous track.
  14. “Real Estate” by Cypress Hill (Cypress Hill)
    • My personal favourite Cypress Hill beat.
  15. “Unprotected Pieces” by Gza (Grandmasters)
  16. “Check Yo’ Self” by Ice Cube (The Predator)
    • The blend of the “Mustang Sally” and “Memphis Underground” sample is nuts. The familiar sound is flipped by Muggs and Das Efx helps out too.
  17. “What Go Around Come Around, Kid” by Cypress Hill (Black Sunday)
  18. “From The Window of My Room” by Cypress Hill (IV)
  19. “King Kong” by Self Scientific feat. Bun B (Change)
    • I believe this song was Co-produced by Muggs while DJ Khalil did his thing on it too. Regardless, it’s a great track with so much energy and thump.
  20. “Rock Superstar” by Cypress Hill (Skull & Bones)

I’m sorry for being such a grammar nazi, but this bothered me. You spelled Cypress Hill wrong. I’m sorry for being annoying, just something I saw and I had to let you guys know. Props for letting Muggs get more of a name, me being Mexican-American I’m a huge fan. Grandmasters album is amazing!

no Matt, you are the homie for pointing that out. I’m an idiot, I knew “Cyprus” looked stupid. Just this morning I drew blanks on words like Initiative and Responsibility. They are just brain farts, but I did lose a position because I made stupid grammatical hip hop errors like Boot Camp Click and Not Clik

So my mistake, I’ll correct it in the AM
