This Is Hip Hop Remix Contest Part II: Week 7 Winner

Week 7 was an interesting week in the contest.  For one, it was the first time we’ve given you all the opportunity to remix Biggie.  Plus, the track “Victory” has a style all its own and made you wonder if you should stick with that theme or go balls to the wall and switch it up.  On top of it all, we took one of the remixers out of the contest and put him up as guest judge for this week!

You guys know him well.. you’ve been competing against him for the past two months… ladies and gentlemen, Mr. G.C.!

G.C:

I think this contest really is a testament to how incredible Biggie Smalls was as a delivery specialist. I heard a wide range of tracks this week with a multitude of styles and levels of intensity. No matter what background he had, his verses fit perfectly with each beat as if they were meant for it. We all miss B.I.G., and you all have done him proud with your submissions.

Ok, now on to the judging. This week had a lot of great submissions, and with most beats sounding “right” with the verses, it was hard to say which one was the best. There were MANY honorable mentions: Abstrakt, Mystro, Manz, Poe Mack, Isbjerg, Phurcat, EP, DJ Profit, Black SS, Kinetic, etc. After listening to all entries and much deliberation, a few really stood out for me.

Here is my Top 7:

7. S.2ITA - The hard sample fits perfectly with the Busta intro and really sets the tone for the rest of the track! Unfortunately, Puffy’s flow just does not match the feel, and maybe taking him out may have kept it consistent. Also, I liked the chopping of the sample but maybe a switch-up here and there would have made it not so monotonous.

6. Dyno - The sample you chose had that feel that really fits the verses well! Drums are nice - the “Rock the Bells” vibe was a nice touch. Again, a switch up in the sample may have broken up the overtone of the song.

5. Kingimi - The intro kind of threw me at first - but when the theme to “Love Story” came on, the mood of the beat fit really well! I would have appreciated a change-up as well on this one.

4. Tokyo Cigar - Solid contender here! Beats fit the mood of the song, switch-ups are nice and the overall feel works well. I can hear where the main a capella was chopped and sampled in - sounds like the sample slowly runs but jumps back in. Great job though - to the untrained ear it would not be that noticeable.

3. S.T.T.R.E.S.S. - Great intro, the mood of the echo effects really sets the tone for the lead-in of the track. Main track was a solid beat, the Scarface switch-up flowed perfectly back into the beat! Maybe a bit more punch in the instrumental would be nice, it is a very lucid track. Good work!

2. Tommylux - It was a tough choice back and forth between this one and the number one pick. The intro set a certain tone for the track that fit Puffy well, but when the main track hit - wow! It sounds like something Puffy would produce and has really high production value. The chorus was just a bit too busy and that was the deciding factor for me. Otherwise, great submission!

1. Dutchmasters - Love the samples you used! This track has great production value and high replay value. The vocal sample mixed in the track is a nice change-up to the beat and fits perfectly with the Busta/DMX/MJB blend. I would recommend a little EQ work for the mix tape to lower the “ahhhhhhh” sample and bring up the a capella track a bit. Awesome job Dutch!

Thomas:

Here are my honorable mentions for this week:Poe Mack, Def Street, Manz, Mystro, Kinetic, S.T.R.E.S.S., Info, S.2ITA, infO and Black SS. Manz and Doni Jo were a toss up for my last spot in top four.

4. Doni Jo - Track made Puff sound “good.” Nice haunting type track. Sounds like they are marching towards “victory.” Track fit the vocals and didn’t over shadow the lyrics.

3. Phurcat the Terrabl - I didn’t like the track on first listen, but I moved it on to “my next round.” It seem a mess at first (off beat a little, didn’t think the horns fit, etc). However, after about 3-4 listens those things were strengths to me. The awkwardness of the track worked for me. Some parts of the vocals seem to get away from you a little, but that was minor. Definitely a favorite.

2. Tommylux - Like the change up and break down in the track. The intro had me thinking this was gonna be laid back, but once B.I.G. came in the change up brought life to the track. Definitely had me nodding my head.

1. Dyno - Great samples. Bob James and the other one I can’t put my finger on worked for the track. Vocals seemed a perfect match for the track. Good work.

My Pick: Dyno

Tommylux and Dyno are 1B and 1A. Both are strong tracks for me this week.

Kevin:

This week was tough to judge… I really had a hard time, cuz it was hard to get the original out of my head.  With that said, here’s my top 10..

10. Kingimi - The intro was nice on this one. But the main beat was just alright to me.

09. Black SS - The beat kinda comes in abruptly and it’s a little repetitive, but it works well with this track.

08. Tokyo Cigar -  I like this beat… not something I would have thought to hear, but it works well.

07. EP -  Loved the intro!  Would have been nice to hear Puff’s verse on top of that piano and Biggie’s intro was a little weird, but the beat behind Biggie fit nice.

06. Dyno - This beat was NICE!  Loved the cowbell (or whatever it was) in my right ear.  This was a tight beat.  Could of switched it up a bit though, otherwise very good.

05. S.T.T.R.E.S.S. - Cool ass intro man.  Beat goes really well with Biggie. I probably would have brought it a little hard when Busta came in, but overall great track.

04.  Jack Nickelz - I knew someone was gonna stay with the original theme of the track!  This was nice… 300, right? Not something I could listen to over and over, but the track is hot.  Loved how you brought the heat up when Busta came in!

03.  DJ Profit - This track is hot!  That sample was straight outta a 70s blaxploitation flick and then you brought in the boom bap drums!  Fire man!

02. Dutchmasters - Only funky track I heard out of the bunch.  Track is completely sick!  Only thing that ruined it for me was that the acapella was too low.  The track drowned out Biggie (and we can’t have that…lol).  Nice job! I probably wouls have left the “Touch It” vocals out too… little too much.

01. Tommylux -  That intro actually made Puff sound good!  That’s what really did it for me and then the drums came in and you hit it when Biggie spit.  I wasn’t sure about the main beat at first, but after a few listens it worked out well.  I was a little afraid about the portion with Busta, but you held it together pretty well.  I think Busta’s second line might be dragging a bit, but you brought it back.  That intro is classic though… props!

Congratualtions Tommylux!

Oh yeah! Damn, that feels gooood!!! Hey, I’m crazy proud cos if you make it to stand out among all these top notch contributions, that’s gotta mean something. Truth be told, I don’t think this is my best effort yet, something’s fishy about the chorus as many of you noticed, but this is the best i could do in the time given. Got lucky with the sample too :-)

Mad thanks to the jury and props to everybody involved in this in whatever way. let’s keep doing this!

Nice job to all - Biggie was a tough cookie to work woth - I was really nervous remixing King of NY and especially a classic, but most of you would have a big chance of making it in the producer role today…. You did great jobs and congrat Tommylux.. I’ve got to step up to compete with you cats…
