This Is Hip Hop Remix Contest Part II: Week 9

This Is Hip Hop Remix Contest Part II: Week 9

Ok, so some people weren’t feeling last week’s tag team.  I understand; I normally prefer to work alone too.  Well this week I hope to bring all of you back as we’re just throwing out an acapella with no stipulations.  Come one, come all…. bring your heat!

The Rules

This Week’s Track

This week we’re going back to 1994 and hittin’ up the underground.  Thomas recommended this track, as it’s one of his favs…  “Time’s Up” by O.C.   Originally produced by Buckwild, this cut off the album Word… Life may sound familiar to some as the instrumental was used in a battle scene in the movie 8 Mile.  Thomas is gonna be judging this one solo, so you can hit him up with the bribs.  Download the tracks below, and good luck!

The cut-off to submit your remix is
Sunday, August 3, 2008 @ 3:00pm EDT
.

O.C. was one of my primary influences when I was a writer. “Jewelz” and “Word…Life” were analyzed beyond measure! Honored to be able to remix this classic-classic-sampled-to-all-hell track! “Diggin’ In The Crates Crew Clique my brother…” Enjoy!

Excellent work with the submissions so far!

kingimi - Word, I like the simplicity of it, sounds like some RZA/Muggs shit…lets Mush ride the beat nicely!

20 Keys - Did it big with the chops! Love the drums, got that neck-snap hardness!

snd - Love the kung fu vibe (I think only Tokyo has seen the collection I have amassed over the years!) The switch-up mid-track is nice too!

    Keep it moving forward family!

I see things are in full swing here. Kingimi, your “simplicity” is what makes your mix shine. 20 and SND are my favorites at the moment. I don’t know what you sampled SND (sounds like something off an old kung fu movie), but they way you flipped it is excellent. GC, what can I say…perhaps master killer! (I just got done watching that movie.) Love your sample too man.

Whats up comrades.Yall are bringing the heat way too early, Ha Ha.

    Kingimi-ill piano stabs,like a murder mystery.Good work

20 Keyz-nice flip with the horns,I was looking for a video with that ha,ha.Nice

SND-that was an exotic ass remix.Great job

G.C.-you stay in the stratosphere, like leather interior in a ride.Smooth like butta.

O.K. Folks, it’s time to check out some of your hard work. so without further delay:

tommylux - dope track. for some reason i had to think of the beatnuts when i heard your track. maybe you could lift the acapella and the drums a little, and turn the sample down just a bit. nice touch with the trumpets playing solo towards the end.

abstract sounds - you managed to bring o.c. into 2008. can’t really fault anything. Tight like a mosquitoes ass. p.s. you are way too modest!

phurcat - looooooooove the sample and the way you arranged it. not sure about the drums yet, but my head is still nodding, so you have to be on the money there!
and check your myspace. i need to talk to you. very, very, very important.

isbjerg - nice drums, i tried to go for a similar style. somewhere in the i can hear dre, but something is missing. maybe a grand piano and a little brass! i also need you to get at me on myspace when you can! myspace.com/onemicentertainment4life. sorry, but i cannot decode the lingo on your site!

goosebumps - liked the track. the acapella is off. you should try sony acid’s beatmapper. my favorite new toy thanks to sttress. also, i didn’t get the aggresive vibe at all. first thing i wanted to do was roll the weed up!

S.T.T.R.E.S.S. - everytime i hear those drums i’m sold, so you got me. not totally sure about the drum/string combo, but that’s just me, homie.

G.C. - I can’t believe you can move house, live out of boxes and still pump out some shit like that! You are the man. Best track hands down, sorry fellas!

snd - that’s a thick beat. i like the way u used the bass. it’s very simple but it carries the track beautifully.you went a bit overkill on the violins, but i know how easy it is to get carried away! ;)

kingimi - don’t know about that one. just wasn’t for me. i know a lot of dudes that like the darker sound, though. no dissing here! keep doing you, homie!

20Keys - Those drums gave me a concussion, nice job. racing awfully close to g.c. there!

One Love to all you hard working folks, thanks for keeping Hip Hop alive!

I normally don’t do this, but this week I can’t help sharing the original take on my entry. i didn’t think the beat suited o.c., but the more i listen to it the more i like it. i wonder which one you guys prefer!

looks like this week everybody’s back - so this week i’ll try to comment on everybody’s remixes.

keenan - i did sort of feel the track, but you gotta get the levels on the individual instruments right. i often struggle with that too!

garcia’s grooves - i loved your beat. you definitely have a lot of talent, but the acapella on this particular beat didn’t do it for me.

remember folks, it’s all just constructive critique. One-

Thanks One, glad you were diggin’ the beat. I appreciate any and all feedback so keep it comin! We are all here to hone our craft/hobby of makin music and nurture our love of hip hop! So I appreciate it!

Speakin of beats, I really like your “version 1/1st take” better of the remix that you posted on July 30th. I love how you chopped and used the unique sample and I think it does flow better with OC than the earlier post. It ends perfectly too as the sample plays us out.

  32. Posted July 31, 2008 at 11:32 am | Permalink

Yo GC you did the damn thing again. I like how you used the C sub bass in the joint. The interview intro and outro was crazy. Did you use FL 8 for that beat?

S.t.t.r.e.s.s. i loved the drama of the joint. Fly strings through the track with nice orchestration too. You stepping it up hard.

Kingimi is that DUDE. My favorite remix i’ve heard so far. The piano, bass and retard hard way you chopped the skull snaps drums was immaculate. Straightforward, to the point beat that has that immaculate neck snap feel. This is that rhyme all day to it type shit.

Yo what tempo did cats use cause i got mine on 96 and parts of the vocals run off.

  33. Posted July 31, 2008 at 12:36 pm | Permalink

wow i cant listen to the entries thus far until tomorrow, but from the comments it sounds like alot of fire! Gonna give em all a listen and submit mine in the next few days.

  34. Posted July 31, 2008 at 5:07 pm | Permalink

    Kingimi Productions - My head’s bobbin from first bar… I like it a lot….
20 Keys - I like the sample, but it gets annoying after first verse…. I know the thing with hot samples you just wanna use it all the time… But its hot as hell… I just would have used it for chorus and a break or two…
Snd - I like the theme in your mix… Very outstanding… I could hear GZA with a verse on that…

G.C.- I always have high expectations for your mixes, but this this time you gave me something else…. It’s mellow and joyfull and Im waiting for Commons voice any minute… Its great for the summer, but I expected something else…

S.T.T.R.E.S.S. - It could very well be from the 90s… I like the drums, but fell the string needs some backup or you need to get them closer to the vocal… But its a headbanger…

goosebumps - Im gonna have to be an ass… I feel the vibe, you want the track to get into, but the vocal is way off…. All off… Maybe take the original and lay it on your beat and make it match yours in speed, and feel and hear where OC’s is hittin the mic… Get in again dawg, im feeling it, but i want the vocals in right place…

Isbjerg - What a genius… He’s hitting hard every single time, you judges shouldnt ignore raw talent He should be doing this as a dayjob ( hahaha )

Phurcat - You got a nose for samples, and I wanna do albums with you… I got a prelisten to it, and I still wanted to change the sample and not the vocal… I mailed you my version - You are my dawg..

Abstrakt Soundz - Im feeling that ! That is raw.. Im riding the vibe and joining in…

One Mic - Aren’t your vocals one bar off ? I like it but I feel like its been beatmixed wrong…. Still, I dig your style and im down…
/Week 9 alt. is off the hook… Shit, where did that come from ? And btw… The vocal are in place on that… A winna track..

Tommylux - Stripped down ? Your levels are way up ! I like that remix, but I disagree on the levels of the samples…

Keenan - OC’s running…. Too bad, cause this track is too great to do nuttin but listen and nod…

Garcia’s Grooves - Same to you… You bring the jazz and the drinks, but let the OC run for him self….

I got 89 sumthing on my tempo, but I could be wrong….
just constructive critique.I hope u can take it…

Thanks for the love, I have been reading replies through my blackberry - things have still been hectic here with the move! I look forward to hearing everyone’s posts once things settle here!

Isbjerg, thanks for the input! I was looking for a sample that D.I.T.C. would use for Mush, and admittedly I have been strained for time. I was thinking of going Preemo on it, but I decided that the sample I used would emphasize his “Champagne Thoughts” persona and be more fitting to “Word…Life”. I personally feel it is a good fit, but that’s what opinions are for! :) One love fam!

Isbjerg - Dark vibe, very reduced – in a good way!
Abstrakt Sounds – This is produced perfectly. Smooth!
Phurcat - Your version is groovy as ****. Love that! And uptempoing the vocals was a good idea, too!
One Mic – Reminds me of good old 90s hiphop! The alt. version is even better.
Tommylux - Makes me bounce! Another great use of samples.
    Keenan – Awesome instrumental!
Garcia’s Grooves – Nice, jazzy feel! Another great trip back to the early 90s!

Abstrakt, your track is blowing my mind right now. Very nicely done. Just a really dope loop.

Snd, that’s a STRONG track. Very epic.

Isberg, I had to cheat to find that quote was 5th Element, but I knew Yes. I’m a big fan of classic rock samples. Nicely done. Give us more of that guitar next time!

Keyz Fargo, not usually my style, but you had me rocking with those dirty horns. That’s a dirty track man.

Garcia, staying true to your namesake. That is a smmooootheed out track.

STTRESS, I’m feeling that track. You got the catchy drums, and those mood strings. I wish there were more songs that sampled movie scores. I guess its too expensive. Busta has a new song called Missile that reminds me of this track.

Tokyo, gotta throw you some love for those crazy chops. You’re pushing wild sounds out there every time. Always grabbing my ear.

Goosebumps, another nice loop, just make sure you use the original song as a guide to see when O.C. drops in, otherwise it won’t sound just right. Peac man, you’re doing dope work.

EB, give me more horns. That’s a nice jazzy track.

Cory, starting off strong with that deep bass. Excited to see what you else you bringing to the table.

Peace guys, those were some of the ones that made me check the name on the remix sitting on the train vibing on the ipod.

Here’s mine for the week. I just wanted to get something in before the deadline, but by all means critique. (For instance lack of drums)

I also agree about the high level or mixes this week. I don’t have time to comment on everyones’ mix, but a lot of hits out there. Tek, love the Bootsy Collins’ What’s a Telephone Bill sample. Also it sounds like Goosebumps used Isley’s Voyage to Atlantis. What I notice is that there are a number of Premierish sounding beats out there. This is easily one of the best weeks of beats.

Whats up fam.It seems that everybody is on board this week.
Goosebumps-Dreamy track and your remix is not that bad that you need to try to submit another one, just tighten up your acapella, that was the case with both of them.

Isbjerg-Simplistic,but the beat captures the early 90s feel.

Phurcat-nice remix and nice use of the take it personal beat.

Abstrakt-you had that chilling on the block vibe.

OneMic-Bouncy remix. And the 2nd one I liked better, for the exception of having overpowering vocals during the verses.

Tommylux-that sample got the Sanford and Son vibe.Nice

Keenan-That remix was like daydreaming in the ghetto

Garcia-Track was soulful and laid back, just the acapella was a little loose

Dutch-Yours was like a live jam session

Nickelz-Remix had energy to it,the only thing I would suggest is,if youre gonna have someone rhyme on the track, make sure the volume level of the rhyme is equal to the acapella so it will like he was on the joint with him.

Keyz Fargo-Grimy beat, the horns sound like you used my former love, the DR-5 drum machine

    Ill-Mannered-That remix was a genre medley.Oh yea,by the way,i’m a crew of one,not a group

Tokyo-Ill vibe, just tighten up a little on acapella and it would ride a bit better if you keep the vocals in the samples out of the verses so it wont drown out the acapella

Cory Hall-Nice vibe just needed to drop down the volume on the vocals and bring up the volume on the drums

    EB-Real-jazzy vibe

Kinetic-Feeling the orchestra feel to the remix

Tek-That must have been the let me reintroduce myself remix.Welcome back

Beatstreet-No harm, but it just sound like you threw the beat and the acapella together and hoped that they would work.just remember that the bpms are there for a reason, but work on it,and believe me,you’ll get it.

    Everybody keep it moving forward.
    Peace!

Beatstreet, I’m impressed that you used the most sampled track in hip hop history! Ballsy, bro. Just playin- hope you get a little more time next week to really go in. Nice ubeat jam though, peace.

P Floyd, glad to have you in the game- your I Know remix is sharp, slick piano. A little Floyd and Enya combo- don’t get that too much in hip hop. Nice vibe. Peace man.

Yo Sttress! Used the “Plural” in “guys” ’cause I meant most of the remixer around here (…using great samples…). Just didn’t now, where to put it in my comment :) Peace!
