The State of Hip Hop: Trance, House & Techno

The State of Hip Hop: Trance, House & Techno

What’s next?

Hip Hop has always had movements and it’s good to feel some fresh air in every genre of music. In the last years we’ve had the screwed hooks out of Texas bumpin’ through our speakers, we’ve had stupid lyrics with their own dance, the South floating the radio stations, and at the moment we need a little bit of autotune to climb the higher positions in our charts.

But there is something else floating around in the last months: European Trance Basslines, House Beats & Techno in today’s Hip Hop… Smells like a movement and makes for a lot of fun!

Last year, the coolest of the class sampled the Godravers of Daftpunk to be “Stronger”, his canadian DJ, A-Trak took it to a whole nother level with his remix and is playin’ his sets on European dancefloors from Ibiza to London. Hipstar Pharrell & his friends are diggin’ Drum ‘N Bass for their next single “Spazz” and built an edgeless eighties, progtrance beat for their Remix of “Everyone Nose”. New and upcoming artists like Wale, Wiz Khalifia, Kid Cudi & Mickey Factz can’t keep their hands away from the House & Electronic Beats. Not to mention Will.I.Am who spitted (or sang) his verses over some European influenced electronic stuff on his last LP Songs About Girls and even our be loved Nasty Nas went out to Polow Da Don to get some of the new stuff for his single “Hero”.

So what is it? Is it just Hipstar Rap? Do we have to wear limited edition Nike SB’s to get that feeling? And where does this trend come from? Who kicked it first?

Was it Swizz Beatz, sampling Daft Punks “Technologic” for Busta’s “Touch It”? Or are those guys called Timberlake and Timbaland responsible for Pharrell cooking clear House beats for Madonna & Co in his kitchen? From my point of view the duo brought something new to the scene and started it 2006 by releasing their FutureSex/Lovesounds. And we remember Timbaland bringing us his Shock Value with House influenced tracks like “The Way I Are” a year later. Of course it’s retro and we had something like this before with the Eurodance movement in 1992-1995. So it’s nothing evolutionary, still I like to see those kind of changes from time to time and since I’m from Europe, I always love me some Electro.

At the end of the day it’s all about good music.

But here’s my question to you: What do you think about that? And what’s next?
Here are some examples for you to decide:

Kanye West: “Stronger

Wiz Khalifa: “Say Yeah

Wale: “W.A.L.E.D.A.N.C.E.

Pitbull: “The Anthem

Busta Rhymes: “Touch It

And some more tracks…

    Thanks for sharing 20!

Excellent article Carsten… I def see the trend here, even though I don’t particularly like it. Call me old fashioned — I like that 90s boom bap. But some of this stuff ain’t bad.

Hip Hop has evolve drastically over the last 30 years. Wonder what we’ll be hearing 30 years from now?

Hey 20 Keys, you crazy for your “Lyndsay Lohans Revenge”!!!!! Great!!

Well, 30 years from now? That’s a crazy and scary question Kev! I guess we won’t have any boundaries in music or the total opposite with a new retro movement and the sound of your loved 90’s.

The ‘European Trance Basslines, House Beats & Techno’ influenced hip-hop over here in the UK is basically the main & most popular form hitting the radio, TV & iPods, & I’m really digging it.

hey nice article man. i definitely feel that new movement. but i think it will disappear as fast as it appeared. hey you could also put neyo’s song “closer” to your list, even though i dont feel that one very much….

You can also hear the trend on some of DJ Benzi’s remix records. As a whole I think it works well but it can get old pretty quick.

I have been playing “Embrace the martian” non stop. Not a huge Crookers fan, but Cudi is nice. I recommend getting his free mixtape. http://www.kidcudi.com/
