Now this is just amazing! I know it’s been floating around the Net all day, but I just got finished listening to it. Thanks to my fellow Miamian, Jorge, at Bang The Box for sharing. If you haven’t got it yet, this is a must download! Original versions and demos to the tracks that made a classic. I was talking with Thomas earlier about this and he says the only thing missing is the Large Professor Lord Finesse version of “Suicidal Thoughts”. At least we got the Pete Rock version. Anything else you would have liked to see on this mixtape? I think they could have left that “Pepsi Freestyle” off. But I’m not complaining!

DAAAAMN! Ya’ll seriously need to bookmark bangthebox.net!
I’ve seen this cover before and seen this album/mixtape on the internet in the past…nice find! Can anyone say Hard Boiled?
I misspoke, it was Lord Finesse (not Large Pro) on that other “Suicidal Thoughts” beat.
this news has made me no less interested. ha.
LOL
thanks Kevin, able 2 download it now.
yeah i got hold of this a coupla days ago and it is superb. biggies verse on the what shows just how raw the guy really was.
on a side note. you see the pproduction credits for the termanology album. damn that should be nice. my only misgiving is that i hope havoc stepped up his game again since the kush fiasco
Does anyone else notice that the Pete Rock version of Suicidal Thoughts sounds just like the original Lord Finesse produced version? Is this a slip-up on the part of the folks who put together the disc? Also, I saw you guys mentioned that you wanted to hear the Lord Finesse version of Suicidal Thoughts, but he did produce the original, so, is there another version? Let me know. Thanks for the up.
After listening to this just had a few thoughts.
Many of the tracks don’t seem that different than the final package. “Intro”, “Warning”, “Everyday Struggle”, “Suicidal Thoughts”, “Respect”, “One More Chance”, “Fuck Me interlude” and “Friend of Mine” sound the same to me.
What is different is “Ready to Die”, different lyrics in “The What” from B.I.G. I personally think the finished version of “The What” is better than what B.I.G. spit in the one on this compilation.
What is apparent to me is Puff did a lot of editing of the violent lyrics. He cut out the part in “Gimme the Loot” about the woman being pregnant and edited the shootout with the police. I did notice at the end of “Respect” that on the “head” skit at the end on the compilation he says “just suck this “d*** B****” but I don’t remember him saying that on the retail version (someone correct me if I’m wrong).
Songs like “Whatcha Want” and “Come On” were never going to make his album regardless of how dope and raw they were. B.I.G. was raw and spitting them hard east coast lyrics; the lyrics (based on this compilation) were too violent and not the vision (like I know) that Puff had for B.I.G…
Say what you want about Puff, but he groomed B.I.G. into the artist that many of us love. If this compilation is the real deal I think Puff did a good job of letting B.I.G. spit that street ish, but at the same time smooth it out for a good overall product.
I read that there is another uncleared version of “Suicidal Thoughts” that Lord Finesse did. I want to say I read it in the xxl that featured the making of this, but I’m not really sure about that either.
If the producer listing is correct on this comp Puff jerked many producers for credits. If Preemo produced “Machine Gun Funk” then he got jacked. All Easy Mo Bee did was change the beat….vocal sample is the sample. If Pete Rock produced “Juicy” he got jacked. Difference between his and what Tone and Poke did was the vocal sample. I did read on the-breaks that Pete Rock spoke on this. When I find the link again I’ll up it in comments.
Ya’ll can front if you want Puff is HARDBODY. He has been jerkin people for a long time. He is the Don King of rap….you know what he is about, but you have to go with him because his track record is proven. And before I get ripped for his…..tell me that once B.I.G. and Craig Mack dropped and definitely after B.I.G. dropped “One More Chance (remix)” Bad Boy didn’t have ish on lock from late ’94 to late ’97?
Damn Thomas, thanks for breaking it down for us. I haven’t had the opportunity to give this a thorough listen and compare it to the retail release. If most of what you say is true (and I believe it is), then this mixtape is nothing to really get excited over. Don’t get me wrong, this is still nice to have, but I won’t be bumpin’ it like I do the retail.
Yeah, it is true that Pete Rock got jacked for “Juicy”. I remember reading it somewhere. Nice to hear the original though!
Here is the link to the article from the breaks were Pete Rock talks about “Juicy”.

I forgot to put this in my original comment. IMO I think Method Man is the ONLY person to outshine B.I.G. on his own record. Method’s verse on “The What” is probably one of his best…next to his two verses on GZA’s “Shadowboxin’”.
Good lookin’ Kev on the rapidshare file those .rar files throw me for a loop that’s the reason I couldn’t download that Jay-Z Glastonbury live footage. I agree Thomas that Method is one of two M.C.’s to hang with BIG on a track the other being HOV of course but I still think BIG outshined Method on The What especially with his second verse and the “hiccup” line pretty much solidified it.
Does the version of “Suicidal Thoughts” with the Lord Finesse beat exist? I’ve ever heard of that before.
Came across the site today, very nice site!
Why does everyone keep referring to a “Lord Finesse” version of Suicidal Thoughts when he produced the version that made the original album? There might be a remix out there or something, but he did the original.
For those that don’t own the cd, here you go:

And here too:

I’m starting to feel like I’m the only cat round here that lived and breathed this album for the first few months of it’s release. I’m exaggerating of course.
Also, I think some of the albums that Thomas mentioned as sounding the same are different in some manner.
I’ll post a compare and contrast later on.
Yeah, Thomas was referring to an “uncleared” version that Lord Finesse did. I’m guessing it had a different sample.
I’d love to hear your compare and contrast though!
@ Harmonix. I know Lord Finesse produced the original track for “Suicidal Thoughts”. I own the tape, CD, and re-mastered version of this joint so I’m good on the production credits.
I was talking about that same track that he may have produced, but didn’t make the album because of possible sample issues. I can’t find the article about it so let’s say it doesn’t exist (until I find it).
I pointed out in my original comment that many of the tracks from the mixtape sound the same as the finished product. Point out to me for example what’s the different about the “Intro” on the mixtape and the “Intro” on the retail version. Has the sample Curtis Mayfield playing, same Audio Two, same Snoop, same jail dialogue, etc. What’s different about “Warning”? Also, can you do the same for the other tracks?
I didn’t listen to the retail version of Ready to Die because I don’t have to compare the two. I “lived and breathed” this album for more than a few months after its release. I know this album like the back of my hand. There aren’t many differences from the songs I listed in the original comment post.
This joint got play from me until Only Built 4 Cuban Linx….hit in August of 1995.
I can tell you what I was doing. First year in college getting ready for the basketball season and practice to start up.
Just re-read what I wrote, comment looks hostile. Comment is not intended to be hostile. It looks that way after reading it again. My bad….no hostility. But, I still would like to hear the differences in the tracks!
I didn’t mean to set anything off with my previous comment. I was referring to what I thought I read, in that there was a different version of “Suicidal Thoughts” than the version presented on this new release and the original. I may have mis-read.
Like Thomas said above, I own the tape, CD, and the remastered versions of the album. I owned it on tape for the longest time before finally getting the CD version.
I’ve never been up to date on Biggie’s unreleased or different versions of songs catalog type of deal, like I am for the most part with Nas. I wasn’t sure how much was out there as far as songs go, especially from this album/era.
I didn’t mean to come off disrespectful with my tone either, so, apologies if that is how I came off myself. If I remember correctly, I did hear some subtle differences in some of those tracks, but I don’t have either version with me right now, so I’ll have to get back to you guys later on tonight.
As far as the Lord Finesse fiasco, maybe I misunderstood what you guys were saying, but the way everyone was referencing Suicidal Thoughts was as if Finesse didn’t produce it.
Now, what really threw me for the curve was the fact that the Pete Rock version on this mixtape is “exactly” the same as the Finesse version on the original, which leads me to wonder if Finesse took credit for the track when Pete really banged it out.
Would love to hear some theories on that one.
Until later…
Well, here my compare and contrast goes:
First of all, in the Intro on the mixtape, the Curtis Mayfield Superfly sample is replaced by a Marvin Gaye Sample. So, that’s the uncleared sample that they mention.
The Warning is the same, as far as I can tell.
Now, on Respect, on the mixtape version, at about the 3:36 point where Diana King says, “Now this is Diana King….”, they drop out the KC and the Sunshine sample and let just Diana and the drums go at it. This doesn’t happen on the retail version. Also, on the retail, they start fading out Diana at the point where she says “Oh yes, we are the best, no other guy can…”. And they cut her off abruptly. On the mixtape version, she gets to add the word “test” to the above phrase and even gets to add in a taunting laugh before the track finishes. So, it is an extended version and even has a different break down from the one on the retail.
Now, on One More Chance, they use the Debarge “All This Love” sample while on the retail they replay it and change the melody a little bit.
Friend of Mine sounds pretty much the same, as I’m sure the F*ck Me Interlude does also.
That’s all I could come up with for the songs that Thomas said sounded the same.
Anyone else notice anything additional?
Since we got into sample territory; anyone know the sample source for the released version of Me & My Bitch? Was that played in studio? I’ve seen Chucky Thompson credited for instruments. I know this one is Minnie Ripperton and the live version samples Computer Love, but the version on Ready To Die……
most of the changes are very subtle. a few extra seconds here & there. there are obviously some very noticable changes (uncleared samples and unedited verses so on).
but even 14 or so years later it all still sounds so damn superb. there are very few albums indeed that can survive that type of longevity & still sound as gfreat as it did when it 1st dropped. very few indeed.
nofrila, where did that mistake come from?
