Recently, I made a post about the Soul Assassins Remix Contest. In that posted I mentioned that the only name that looked familiar over there was my man Remot. I don’t know how, but I somehow managed to overlook our girl Ms. JeyLah in the number one spot! You may remember Ms. JeyLah from her American Gangster remix, Lyrical Gangster.
The votes are still going on over there, but I just had to put up the crazy video that Ms. JeyLah sent over to me. This joint is especially hot! Ms. J, my deepest apologies… we won’t forget you next time.

A little over a month ago, we launched a new contest in coordination with WYDUand DJ SoulClap. This was a different contest in that it was made for the emcees this time around. Read the original post for the details.

It’s not available yet, but dude put together this bad ass video for his “Blue Magic” remix to build the hype. After seeing the video, I had to put it up here. You wouldn’t believe that I still receive American Gangster remixes to this day! Most of them, I end up deleting, but this vid caught my eye. This is Mydus, out of Miami… check the vid!
There’s an amazing remix contest going on over here that I’d like to draw your attention to. If I would have known about it sooner I would have told you all about it so you could have a shot. But they aren’t accepting any new submissions. Voting has already started and they have a ton of great remixes.
I would like to highlight one remix in particular; from This Is Hip Hop fam Remot. I wouldn’t be posting it here if I didn’t think it was good. I just voted for him myself. Here we are…. the end of the month and the end of the contest. It’s been a long 13 weeks and it has definitely been a lot of fun. We went from close to 40 contestants in the beginning to 20 of you all finishing up the last week. Special props go to Isbjerg, One Mic, and S.T.T.R.E.S.S. for not missing a single week! And thank you to the rest of the regulars who made this contest what it is.
We will be following up with the 90s Remixtape as soon as everything is finalized. I hope to have it released mid to late September and we’ll be going for a massive push to get as many listeners as we can.
As for the next contest, we already have something special planned. It’s going to be a lot different than what we’ve done in the past. This time we’ll be working with the actual artists of the tracks you’ll be remixing and the remixes may actually see an official release. More details will be revealed in the coming weeks.
For now, check out the remixes submitted for Week 13. You all brought the westside out right here! Thomas and I will be judging these tracks and we should have a winner picked by the end of the week. Good luck!

We have really had a blast doing Ghostface Week and we hope you enjoyed the goodies too! To finish up the week, here are a few of my favorite Ghostface Killah mixtapes. Two from Mick Boogie and one from DJ Chong Wizard, who mixed Toney Starks and Jay-Z’s American Gangster… a must have!

Not only is The Big Doe Rehab a follow up to More Fish, it is the official follow up to Fishscale. It must be hard to constantly have to compete with yourself every time you drop an album. Since Ironman first dropped we all knew that Ghostface Killah was a force to be reckoned with. However, The Big Doe Rehab is a lot different than most Ghost albums. Usually there is a list of a few songs on each album that aren’t quite up to par with the rest of the album, but this album is the opposite. This time around Ghost put together a collection of songs that was real hit or miss.
DJ Chong Wizard just hit me up with a new mixtape he did with DJ G-Spot. This time it features all new music from Phoenix Jones and Donny Arcade, two of the best emcees to ever come out of Cleveland! This mixtape is definitely one you’ll want to check out. The production is incredible and Phoenix & Donny are seriously sick on the mic. Check the tracklist and download after the jump. I got a feeling we’ll be hearing a lot more from this duo.
Everyone brought their Wu on when they remixed Method Man’s “Release Yo Delf”. Some people dug deep and brought out their old king fu flicks!
Thomas and I decided to leave this one alone and let the peers decide who’s remix was the best. All of the remixers voted for their top 3 remixes, we compiled those votes and came up with one winner. Here’s how they voted…

The gap between hip hop and Seth Rogan really isn’t that large. If you have seen Knocked Up, you may remember the first song to be heard was “Shimmy Shimmy Ya” by none other than Ol’ Dirty Bastard. Superbad, another movie Rogan had a large part in, contained “Here I Come” by the Legendary Roots Crew and also the DangerDoom logo, which appeared in a character’s room. It didn’t stop there, as Pineapple Express contained a beautiful usage of M.I.A’s “Paper Planes” for the trailer and even had Dilated Peoples and Cypress Hill joints on screen. While I appreciate his taste in music, I more so appreciate his acting and his writing along with long time friend (and Canadian) Evan Goldberg. Together, it is safe to say that they have gone three for three (the two aforementioned movies) as Pineapple Express is an all around great movie with very few flaws.
All week we’ve been giving you great Ghostface bangers, but nobody tears up a R&B track like Toney Starks. Ghost has been blessing us with his presence on R&B cuts from Mary J, Jodeci, and Beyonce all while making the track a better song. We’ve compiled all the R&B-flavored cuts Ghost has repped over the years onto one disc. Git yo groove on!
Fokis is set to drop his free EP 20/20, which is solely produced by Focus of Aftermath Ent, on September 16th. The EP will feature Mistah F.A.B., Young Dre the Truth, Punch (of the group eMC), as well as others. We’ll have it for download right here as soon as it’s available.
In the meantime, we were able to catch up with Fokis and talk about the ga-zillion projects he’s been working on this past year. Dude works hard! It’s only a matter of time before people get hip to him. Check out the interview…
