New Music Tuesday: 11/25/08

Yeah, Kanye and Luda got the jump on the game yesterday, but there’s still some pretty dope music coming out today. Most notable The Layover from Evidence. I will most definitely be coppin’ that one today. We also get some new E-40, Aceyalone, and Sheek Louch.

What are you coppin' this week?

Review: College Dropout

A lot of producers try and do what Kanye West has done and simply come up short. We’ve heard countless producers try their hand at rapping but for some reason they just don’t cut it. Kanye had a pretty solid fan base built up based off of his beats prior to dropping College Dropout but with this release, Kanye was opened up to a whole new world, The Mainstream. It’s hard not to love the production ‘Ye has been a part of but when he decided to pick up the mic, the masses truly fell in love. Whether it is Kanye’s unique flow, lyricism or his swagger, Kanye offers a little bit of something for everyone.

Distrakt: Fire Escape

Distrakt sent this over to me today and I just had to put it up her tonight.  This video is crazy! Distrakt edited and directed the video as well as did the beat and all the lyrics for this pretty dope track. You must check this it… it deserves a VMA of something! LOL

Jake One: The Truth

Brand new video from Jake One, featuring Freeway and Brother Ali! If you all don’t have a copy of White Van Music yet, you don’t know what you’re missing. We did an interview with Jake over a month ago and I feel bad that I haven’t gotten it online yet. But transcribing the audio has been a bitch. I may just throw it up as mp3 for you all to check out. Enjoy this video for now…

Kanye West vs. Inspectah Deck

Aretha Franklin: “Call Me”
From the album This Girl’s In Love With You (1970)

Slum Village: “Selfish”
From the album Detroit Deli: A Taste of Detroit (2004)
Produced by Kanye West

Method Man: “Spazzola”
From the album Tical 2000: Judgement Day (1999)
Produced by Inspectah Deck

We all know the beat by Mr. West (one of my favs), but Inspectah Deck used the Aretha Franklin sample first for a track he did with fellow Wu-Tang member Method Man. Two different takes on the classic “Call Me.” Which is better?

Who flipped it better?

Kanye West: Unreleased

Back in 2003 before College Dropout was released, there were all kinds of bootlegs of Kanye material floating around. We honestly did not know which version of College Dropout was the right version until the album dropped in February 2004. This happened again in 2005 prior to Late Registration being released. A lot of the tracks that were on early releases of College Dropout ended up on “advanced” copies of Late Registration. Of course, none of them were on the official release. Kanye left a lot of songs on the cutting room floor. I have compiled most of what I could and what I know into this Unreleased compilation. A few of the beats have seen some form in one way or another. For instance, “Apologize” ended up being the beat for Monica’s “Knock, Knock” and “Wack Niggas” ended up on Consequence’s album with an added verse by Common. The last track is sort of a bonus. It’s not a Kanye beat, but more of a freestyle over Kelis‘ “Milkshake”. It was worth the inclusion though!

At any rate, this compilation has some very dope tracks and should be in ever Kanye fan’s collection. Enjoy!

College Dropout: Instrumentals

I love instrumental versions of hip hop albums! Unfortunately, the College Dropout instrumentals are the only ones I have of Kanye West’s albums. I really think his new album, 808s & Heartbreak, would make an excellent instrumental album, sort of like a soundtrack. Ultimately what I would like to do with the 808s & Heartbreak instrumentals is put them up here for cats to sample to create a hip hop album out of it. That would make a dope contest.

If anyone has the instrumentals to Late Registration, Graduation, or 808s & Heartbreak… hit us up!

New Music Tuesday…. errrr Monday

Yup, two of this week’s most anticipated music releases are getting the early release treatment, thanks to Def Jam wanting to get the jump on the Thanksgiving shopping weekend. I feel kinda bad that we’ve left Luda out of the festivities this week, as his new album Theater of The Mind is very, very good and one that I will be coppin’ before I decide if I buy 808s and Heatbreak. So what are you picking up today?

What are you coppin' today?

Kanye West: Sample Discography

For those of you that haven’t grabbed these already, here are all our Kanye West sample sets. Props to Ivan for putting together the few samples that made up 808s & Heartbreak. That last graphic is for the mega Production Sample Collection we put together over the summer.

Kanye West vs. Timbaland

Nina Simone: “Sinnerman”
From the album Pastel Blues (1965)

Talib Kweli: “Get By”
From the album Quality (2002)
Produced by Kanye West

Timbaland: “Oh Timbaland”
From the album Shock Value (2007)
Produced by Timbaland

Well, Deez called it… his favorite Kanye produced track, “Get By”. I’ll agree with Deez, what Kanye did with the sample is amazing. But are you familiar with what Timbaland did with it? I think Timbo was definitely inspired by Kanye to use the sample, but he put that umph on it like no one else can. What do you think?

Top 10 Kanye West Freelance Productions

To narrow things down into a top ten with Kanye’s production was very difficult. I had to take various things into account. Impact, delivery , execution, creativity, flow, sound, blends, choruses, skips, timing, etc. Man, the list goes on. A lot of you guys are producers so you understand where I am coming from on this.

I went in with an objective eye, and certainly left beats off that were personal favourites and tried to appease the mob with this final list. I tried to vary it as much as possible and try to keep it as fresh as possible too.

Any compliants? Leave a comment and I may or may not respond. All in all, enjoy it for what it is. Granted, I think that I’m right all the time and many of you will want to switch in one, move one up, etc. Make your top ten list if you want and I’ll critique the hell out of it.

Review: Glow In The Dark Europe

There’s been a lot of talk about Kanye’s Glow in the Dark Tour on the Net in the last months. Pictures, Youtube videos as well as positive and crushing reviews. So when I first heard in October that Yeezy was makin’ a stop here in Germany for his tour, I knew I had to check it out and build my own opinion. A lot of my friends were skeptic because of Kayne’s latest trips into autotune and even the homie Kev was like: “You know he’s gonna perform his new songs, right?”. So I became a little skeptic if it’s worth to spend 47 Euros (58 $) for the show…

As we officially launch Kanye Week on the site, he’s a new interview he did for BBC Radio’s 1Xtra.

  • Working with Young Jeezy.
  • Working with Lil’ Wayne.
  • Working with R Kelly.
  • Why he really changed ‘Love Lockdown’.

And the quote that every blogger is talking about…

Between A Rock and A Hard Place: Original Samples

This set is for my man Tokyo Cigar who requested it….we aim to please!  The Artifacts consisted of the duo El Da Sensei and Tame One and released Between A Rock and A Hard Place in 1994 to critical acclaim from the underground and critics.  The album produced the well received single “Wrong Side of the Tracks” which paid tribute to the art of graffiti.  Production was handled by Buckwild, T-Ray (Soul Assassins), RedmanDrew, and Rockwilder.

A few notes on the set:  The Emerson Lake & Palmer sample is 20 mins long and broke down into four parts.  The original song name is “Memoirs Of An Officer And A Gentleman” with the four different sections of the song named:  a- “”Prologue / The Education Of A Gentleman, b- “Love At First Sight”, c- “Letters From The Front”, and d- “Honourable Company (A March)”.  I’ve added two James Brown samples for “It’s a New Day” because I could distinguish what was what.  If anyone knows please enlighten me.  Enjoy!

Artist Spotlight: Euphon

Euphon’s brand of music brings about classic Hip-Hop themes and ideals all with a contemporary flair. Relying less on arrogance and more on conviction, assertiveness and a willingness to showcase vulnerability, Mr. Fantastik’s flamboyant B-Boy delivery only complements Slim’s quiet confidence. The Harlem, New York duo’s “Anti-Music Music” movement is one that states that a corrupted system can only be change from within.

Euphon draws and provides inspiration from their rich blend of Hip-Hop, Jazz, Funk, and Soul influences. Their balanced, no-gimmicks approach garnered the group respect from their peers in New York’s underground Hip-Hop circuit and led to a cult following.
