jcpoppe-wide

Honest. Aggressive. Meaningful. These are all words that have been used to describe the music that JC Poppe makes. Honesty is the number 1 policy for the Milwaukee, Wisconsin native. For the past several years, hip hop music has been moving further and further away from what is real and legitimate and closer to a complete fantasy world. With his new album Sleep Therapy, Poppe calls out the lies and the liars very brazenly out of love and respect for the culture that he grew up in and around.

Sleep Therapy has a few guest features from Naledge (of Kidz In the Hall) and Guilty Simpson. Straight up, this album is just dope. Preview it after the cut and if you dig it, cop it… support real hip hop!

I know, I know… I heard the news latest night and couldn’t believe it. This album really is one of my most anticipated this year. I actually woke up yesterday thinking, “The Natural should be out tomorrow… yeah!” Unfortunately, due to some… ummm….. delays, we’re gonna have to wait a bit longer. Not sure how long yet. But from what I’ve heard from this album (yes I’ve heard more than you… lol) and the features behind it, it will definitely be worth the wait!

Hear Emilio break it down for us and give us a peep at the intro…

Celebrating their recent release, the members of DMV’s luminary hip-hop trio Diamond District take fans back to their birth, re-introducing the track “Gully” off of emcee/producer Oddisee’s album Foot in the Door. This percussive, up-tempo track marks the first time that Oddissee, YU, and X.O. ever came together to create the signature sound that now defines this dynamic threesome. Oddissee’s grooving drum track and dragging, behind-the-beat melody underlie the three emcees as they take turns spitting their respective verses, creating the effortless chemistry that now is Diamond District. This track, released in 2006, was the beginning; the cornerstone to this group’s development. YU’s lyric says it all. “In a cocoon like a butterfly, before the wings, never thinking like a peasant, I was born a king.”

In addition to “Gully,” Diamond District recently recorded a video with all three showing their lyrical dexterity a cappella style, like true emcees do. XO and YU set off the cipher with strong deliveries and tongue twisting punch lines while Oddisee ends the session off with a scorcher, “I doubt they’ll ever cross over to the rap game so they rootin’ for me yellin’ cuz get a plaque mang, done and I don’t even want the rap fame, it’s a by-product when you always give a track flames, One.

Alright…. I told you all HiPNOTT Records is doing it up big this month and in the famous words of my man Diddy, “we won’t stop, cuz we can’t stop!” We have 10 full days until the first full length release from HiPNOTT’s First Lady, Dasha. The mixtape, mixed by DJ Mark-1, is called Back 2 The Future: Remakes & Remixes Vol 1 and is comprised of remakes of some of Dasha’s favorite hip hop songs.

Each day up until the release of the project, Dasha is going to give us a video blog counting down her favorite tracks. This will let you get to know a bit about Dasha and will let you preview a bit of the mixtape before it drops. So check it out!

DJ Premier: Back to Basics

by Thomas on November 4, 2009 · 7 comments

premo

DJ Premier hooked up with Christina Aguilera in 2006 for her Back to Basic double disc LP.  I think the production from Premier was vintage Preem (i.e., “Intro (Back to Basics)” and “Back in the Day”), but some poppy’ish Premier as well (see “Ain’t No Other Man”).

Dope stuff nevertheless….hit the cut for the info and links (ALT included).
